Piptal® was an anticholinergic drug used in the management of peptic ulcer and gastritis. The active principle is pipenzolate methyl bromide, a potent small molecule with muscarinic blocking activity. The compound inhibits muscarinic (cholinergic) receptors on smooth muscles and prevents the effect of acetylcholine. Notably, the drug blocked the choleretic effect (flow of bile) of insulin. Pipenzolate methyl bromide is structurally close to mepenzolate methyl bromide (Cantil®) and piperidolate hydrochloride (Dactil®). Piptal is no longer used today.
