The drug Trophirès® (suppositories) was used to treat chronic and acute respiratory affections. It has been develop as a protecting agent of the respiratory tract, helping to combat cough and fever. It was used as a antitussive and antipyretic agent, active against different types of mild respiratory damages. The drug contained four active principles: (i) an essential oil derived from the plant Myrtus communis L. (myrtle oil), (ii) Eucalyptus oil which has an anti-inflammatory effect, (iii) camphor and (iv) Na thiophene-2-carboxylate, a compound acting as a mucoregulator to facilitate expectoration. The product is no longer used today but other drugs containing M. communis essential oils can be found, acting notably as natural antioxidants. This type of oil contains monoterpenoids (such as myrcene, limonene, α-pinene) contributing to the antioxidant and antibacterial effects.
