Vitamin B12 normally helps the body to use fat and carbohydrates for energy and to make new proteins. Diets low or without animal products are associated with a risk of vitamin B12 deficiency which can lead to serious health problems in children and adult, such as anemia, pancytopenia and, in some cases, neuropsychiatric disorders. Treatment with parenteral vitamin B12 can rapidly improve the symptoms. Vitamin B12 is normally provided via the alimentation (B12 is found in fish, chicken, cheeses and dairy products, beans, oatmeal, …) but a B12 supplementation is needed in some cases. Ampules of B12 MILLE, for iv, sc or im injections, is recommended to treat pernicious anemia.
