This venotonic drug was used, essentially orally (Esberiven® drinkable ampules) and topically, to relieve symptoms of discomfort and heaviness of legs related to minor venous circulatory disturbances, or to treat bruises and sprains. The drug improves the lymphedema of the extremities, to correct the stagnant microcirculation to a more steady-flow in the region of an edema. It was used also to treat localised varicose syndrome or capillary fragility based on the anticoagulant, anti-edematous and antiphlogistic properties of the Melilot extracts. Esberiven® is no longer used today but different Melilotus herbal products can be found. Melilotus extracts (from the plant Melilotus officinalis (L.) Lam.) contains coumarin and derivatives, with 7-hydroxycoumarin being the main active metabolite.
